The optimal or normal  position of the uterus is centered in the pelvis behind and slightly leaning over the bladder, about one and a half inches above the pubic bone. The uterus is suspended in position by smooth muscle, the vaginal wall and 8 ligaments that attach it to the back, front, and sides of the pelvis. The uterine ligaments are designed to slightly move in order to accommodate an enlarged uterus during menses, during pregnancy, and to move freely when the bladder or bowel is full.  These ligaments and muscles can weaken or become over stretched due to a variety of events such as a fall or a motor vehicle accident, or pregnancy and labor, or heavy lifting.  When the supporting ligaments and muscles loosen or become over stretched, the uterus can fall partially or totally downward out of the vagina, forward pressing intounto the rectum  or to either side the bladder, backward pressing .  Other indications for this work include
post surgical recovery from caesarean sections or hysterectomy.
